We are a group of local—and not so local—people passionate about the protection of Middlewick Ranges. United by a shared commitment to preserving one of Colchester District’s most significant ecological treasures, we come from various backgrounds, bringing together expertise from organizations like Essex Wildlife Trust, Buglife, Essex Field Club, Colchester Natural History Society, and Friends of Middlewick Ranges.
Middlewick Ranges serves as a vital link in the landscape, bridging the urban with the wild, and connecting to the Roman River and River Colne SSSI—areas of national ecological importance. This local wildlife site, treasured by the community, is home to the largest stretch of rare acid grassland in Essex. For over two centuries, this undisturbed habitat has supported a diverse array of flora and fauna, including over 1,480 species of invertebrates and numerous red-listed birds, making it a national biodiversity hotspot.
However, the future of Middlewick Ranges is under threat from proposed housing developments that would see up to 1,000 houses built on this historic site. Such development risks not only the loss of habitat but also the intricate ecological networks and the vast array of ecosystem services it provides, from carbon storage and flood control to enhancing local air quality and community well-being.
In response, we advocate for the removal of Middlewick Ranges from the Local Plan, urging that it be preserved as a community asset or nature reserve. Through our efforts, we aim to ensure that Middlewick Ranges remains a sanctuary for wildlife and a haven for the community, continuing to enrich our local heritage and natural environment for generations to come.
